How to Wash Gym Clothes and Dri-FIT Without Ruining Them
Share
Wash Dri-FIT and other synthetic training clothes in cold water, inside out, without fabric softener, and let them air dry. Softener and high heat are what kill performance fabric and lock in smell.
Why gym clothes start to smell
Synthetic fabrics like Dri-FIT are built to move sweat away from the skin fast. The same structure holds onto body oils and bacteria, which is where the smell comes from. Washing hot or using softener makes it worse, not better.
The basic routine
- Turn them inside out. The inside is the side that touched your skin.
- Wash cold, around 30°C. Heat damages elastic fibres and can set odours.
- Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibres and blocks the moisture-wicking that you paid for.
- Use less detergent, not more. Excess detergent leaves residue that traps bacteria.
- Air dry. A tumble dryer on high heat is the fastest way to ruin a Dri-FIT shirt and shrink the fit.
For clothes that already smell
Soak them for 20 to 30 minutes in cold water with a cup of white vinegar before a normal cold wash. Vinegar breaks down the residue holding the odour. Do not mix vinegar with bleach.
Don't leave them in the bag
The single biggest cause of ruined gym clothes is leaving damp kit balled up in a bag overnight. Hang them as soon as you get home, even if you cannot wash them that day.
Compression wear
Compression pieces have more elastic in them, so heat damage shows faster as a loose, baggy fit. Cold wash and air dry only.
Cotton is different
Cotton shirts and hoodies handle warm water better, but they also shrink in a hot dryer. If you like the fit of a cotton piece, air dry it. The difference between the two fabrics is covered in Dri-FIT vs cotton.
Football kit
Grip socks keep their rubber pads longer with a cold wash and air dry. Never put them in a hot dryer, because the grip pads soften and peel. See what grip socks are for.
FAQ
Can I use fabric softener on Dri-FIT?
No. It coats the fibres and reduces the sweat-wicking the fabric is built for.
What temperature should I wash gym clothes at?
Cold, around 30°C. Higher temperatures damage elastic fibres.
How do I get the smell out of training shirts?
Soak in cold water with white vinegar for 20 to 30 minutes, then wash cold as normal.
